Roofing Terms, Continued

Long Top and Short Top - The pieces required when using shingle tile to finish the roof at the ridge. They are designed to allow the tiles at the ridge to have a consistent exposure with the rest of the field tiles when they terminate at the ridge.

Ridge or Cresting - The piece required to cover the ridge. The pattern and design are selected according to preference.

Ridge Cross - The piece required where one ridge crosses another ridge.

Ridge T - The piece required at the intersection of two ridges.

Rolled Rake - The piece required to finish the gable edge of the roof for Spanish and Mission Tiles. It is used as an alternative to the more angular detached gable rakes.

Shake - Similar to a shingle, but thicker, rougher (can be split or sawn) and cut square (not tapering)

Shingle Tile - Field tiles that is flat and rectangular in shape, usually in thicknesses that range from 3/8" to 3/4". Ludowici offers two collections of shingle tiles: the rustic-style collection is marked by induced warpage and regular, straight butts (CalaisTM, GeorgianTM, NormanTM and ProvincialTM Tiles); and the crude-style collection featuring irregular lengths, cratered, highly textured surfaces and severely chipped butts (AntiqueTM, BrittanyTM, ColonialTM and CrudeTM Tiles).

Siding Tile - This term is applied to all roofing tile used on upright work (i.e. sides of dormers). Various patterns of tile may be used for this purpose, but flat interlocking and slab shingle tiles are best suited for this application.

Standing Seam - A copper covering denoted by the seams which literally stand up. These copper roofs are used in many places where tile or slate may not be appropriate, or, they are selected because they add to the overall look.

Terminal - the piece required where a ridge intersects a hip or hips. They are specified according to the number of ridges and hips that intersect. For example, 2H - 1R means that two hips intersect one ridge. Ornamental gable terminals and ornamental ridge/hip terminals are used to produce a finial-type appearance. The pitch of the roof is always required when ordering terminals, along with "starter" or "finisher" designation.

Top Fixture - The piece required at the eave line of all low profile patterns. It provides the proper cant for the first course of field tile as well as a finished edge.
